If Homelessness happens to you? The McKinney -Vento Assistance ACT provides certain rights and protections for families experiencing homlessness. Homelessness includes any one : Homeless children have the right to: Students can begin attending school immediately, even if they do not have academic records, a birth certificate, immunization records, or proof of residenc Students have the right to remain in their school of origin (the school they attended before becoming homeless or the school in which they were last enrolled) if it is in their best interest. They may also choose to enroll in the local school serving the area where they are currently staying. School districts must provide or arrange transportation to and from the student's school of origin when applicable. Eligible students automatically qualify for free breakfast and lunch programs. Students are entitled to services comparable to those provided to other students, including: Special education Counseling and academic support Assistance from the district's McKinney-Vento homeless liaison Help obtaining school supplies Assistance with barriers to participae for school-related activities. These rights help ensure that children and youth experiencing homelessness can continue their education with as little disruption as possible. What you can do before moving? Living in a motel, hotel, trailer park, or campground because they do not have adequate alternative housing. Living in an emergency shelter, transitional shelter, or have been abandoned in a hospital. Sleeping in a place that is not intended for regular human habitation, such as a public or private location not designed for people to live in. Living in a car, park, public space, abandoned building, substandard housing, bus station, train station, or a similar location. Inform the school staff that: You are moving. You would like your child to remain enrolled in the Fort Thomas Unified School District until you relocate. Your new address and contact information. Take important enrollment documents with you, including: Birth certificate Immunization records Other school records and documents Enroll your student(s) in the new school as soon as possible after you move.
